Our volunteers play a key role in the charm of Thistle Hill. We hope that you will join us in sharing Thistle Hill with the community.

Here are just a few ways to get involved at Thistle Hill. For more information please e-mail or call (817) 336-1212.

Docent: Entertain and educate visitors by relating the rich history of Fort Worth and Thistle Hill. Groups generally take about an hour to see the first two floors as our docents provide general information and respond to specific interests of individuals in the tour groups. Docents may volunteer on a regular weekly or monthly basis or be on call to assist with large groups.

Researcher: For those who like to investigate, volunteers who can help research in a particular area are needed. Guests on tours continue to ask questions about topics that we should explore further. Information for the continued restoration of sections of the house or grounds should be located. Researching fundraising opportunities to expand our financial base remains a constant.

Children's Programs:
Share your knowledge and enthusiasm with children in Thistle Hill's educational events. History comes to life when the youth practice skills such as embroidery or quilting common in the early 1900s or make and taste foods of the Edwardian time period.

Host or Hostess:
Assist at special events conducted in the house that do not require guided tours. Greet guests and respond to basic questions to make visitors feel welcome. Hosts and hostesses generally help a few times a year.

Gardening/Grounds:
For those with a green thumb: Keep the property picture perfect for all of the weddings, receptions, and other special occasions celebrated here. Seasonal help is needed, although some projects could run longer.

Public Relations: Help get the word out about Thistle Hill! Meet a diversity of people as you distribute posters or flyers about fund raisers or special events. Motivate those who know about Thistle Hill to come in for a tour. Work on a specific project or help on a continuing basis.

Special Events:
Be sure that Thistle Hill's fund raisers run smoothly. Help is needed for the Bridal Fair, Golf Tournament, Antiques Fair, Heritage Holidays and Plant Sale, to name a few.

Gift Shop Sales: Help our guests find that special remembrance of their visit to Thistle Hill. Schedule your time weekly of monthly.

Committee:
Serve on one of the Thistle Hill board committees to help guide the operations of the House. Utilize your areas of expertise, or serve on a committee that will help you expand your knowledge. Choices include Membership, Building and Landscape, Finance, Acquisitions or Development.

Office Support:
Help answer the telephone, provide light secretarial support, enter data in the computer, label bulk mailings, or be a jack-of-all-trades. Substitute when staff are on vacation, or assist during peak times prior to, and during, special events.

One of the premier residential landmarks of Fort Worth, Thistle Hill is the most impressive surviving mansion of the “cattle baron” era. The main wing of the house is a two and one-half story gambreled mass with flanking semi-circular bays. Tall chimneys and an immense portico with Tuscan columns accentuate the vertical thrust of the composition. Red brick walls are sumptuously rimmed in cast stone; roofs are clad in lustrous green tile. Interior features include entry hall with grand staircase and extensive woodwork. The fenced grounds, including a very fine carriage house, have survived. The house was designed by Sanguinet & Staats and built in 1903-1904. The property was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1977, and has been placed on the National Register.
